Explosion sinks the Mary Rose in Boston Harbor.

August 6, 1640

(OS-7/27) [7/23-Bremer] The explosion kills the captain and 14 of the 15 other men on board. Shortly before the ammunition explosion, the captain had declined an invitation to bring his crew ashore for church services. According to John Winthrop’s journal, the captain claimed, “They had as good service aboard as we had on shore.”
